Abstract

Objective: Non-infective rhinitis describes a collection of symptoms that occur due to nasal inflammation with dysfunctionality of nasal mucosa, several modalities of treatments were used, as silver nitrate had been suggested to relieve its symptoms, so aims of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of local application of 20% silver nitrate in relieving the clinical presentation of non-infective rhinitis. Patients and Method: Forty-seven adult patients diagnosed with chronic non-infectious rhinitis whom failed conventional therapy. Nasal application of 20% silver nitrate was used once weekly on four sequenced occasions. All data were coded, and analyzed to check significance difference in severity of nasal symptoms. Results: Thirty-nine patients (52.7%) had allergic rhinitis and 35 patients (47.3%) had nonallergic non-infective rhinitis. There was a significant improvement in total nasal symptoms after 20% sliver nitrate local application, as, at day 90, in allergic rhinitis group (p-value = 0.021), and in non-allergic non-infectious group (p-value = 0.011), and also, dropping in number of studied patients; as with rhinorrhea from 74 to 28 patients, sneezing from 66 to 19 patients, and nasal blockage from 38 to 11 patients, with overall good response (68%). Conclusion: A significant improvement in severity of nasal symptoms, such as rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal blockage, with overall good success rate among the studied sample as a whole, and among allergic rhinitis and non-allergic non-infective rhinitis groups, so local application of silver nitrate can be used in its treatment as it is effective, easy, and with negligible side effects.
